Biomass distribution and physiological capabilities of bacteria in the water column above a sea grass system. ArchiMer

The distribution pattern of bacteria in the water column above and within a Posidonia oceanica bed near Ischia (off the Gulf of Naples) was investigated and correlated with DOC and POM data for autumn and winter. Data from samples of 5 stations along a transect from shallow to deep showed rather low bacterial densities (10 super(4).ml super(-1)) for both seasons. The number of attached bacteria was higher in late winter as compared to autumn when the leaves are shed from the stands. Except for occasional peaks DOC ranged between 1.5 and 4.5 mg C/1 while POM concentrations ranged form 4 to 14 mg AFDW.1 super(-1). Cyanobacterial occurrence and diversity in seagrass meadows in coastal Tanzania OceanDocs

We report on the occurrence and diversity of cyanobacteria in intertidal seagrass meadows at Ocean Road and Mjimwema, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Nutrients, temperature and salinity were measured as comparative environmental factors. A total of 19 different cyanobacteria taxa were encountered, out of which eight were found exclusively in Mjimwema, four exclusively in Ocean Road and seven were common to both sites. Oscillatoria, Lyngbya and Spirulina were the dominant cyanobacterial genera. Cyanobacterial coverage was higher in Mjimwema (31–100%) than in Ocean Road (0–60%). Données sur les caractéristiques et la phénologie de l’herbier de <Posidonia oceanica> (l.) Delile sur les côtes de Mahdia (région Est de la Tunisie) OceanDocs

Le présent travail présente les résultats relatifs à la caractérisation de l’état de l’herbier de Posidonia oceanica de la zone de Mahdia, moyennant l’étude de la phénologie, au niveau de huit stations reparties sur cette zone pendant les saisons estivales et hivernales. Les herbiers de Posidonia oceanica prospectés de la région de Mahdia sont pour la plupart en très bon état; cependant, nous avons mis en évidence une mauvaise vitalité à Ben Ghayadha, à Sidi Salem et au la station Corniche. Le suivi de la variation saisonnière de l’état des herbiers fait apparaître une réduction de la longueur moyenne des feuilles adultes et intermédiaires, l’augmentation du nombre moyen des feuilles intermédiaires et une réduction de la surface foliaire depuis l’été...

La distribución espacial de los pastos marinos depende de las condiciones ambientales presentes, destacándose la profundidad, temperatura, salinidad, sustrato y nutrientes. La plataforma continental de La Guajira presenta extensas praderas de pastos marinos dominadas por Thalassia testudinum, las cuales representan más del 80 % del total nacional. Con el fin de caracterizar su distribución en función de la profundidad, materia orgánica y tipo de sustrato, se midieron algunas variables estructurales de T. testudinum en 15 estaciones situadas en uno de los tres siguientes intervalos de profundidad: somero (0-2 m), medio (2-4 m) y profundo (>4 m). Se estudian los tipos de vegetación en el litoral del Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona. Departamento del Magdalena, costa Caribe colombiana, durante la época de lluvias. Los métodos utilizados son modificados de la fitosociologfa terrestre; las apreciaciones de abundancia y presencia siguen las escalas de Braun-Blanquet (1965). Los tipos de vegetación se distribuyen verticalmente según la zonación en cada uno de los habitáis estudiados, a saber: rocoso, ¿reno-rocoso y are no-fangoso, cada uno subdividido según el grado de exposición al oleaje. Structure and properties of fibres from sea-grass (Zostera marina) ArchiMer

This paper presents results from a study of fibres extracted from Zostera marina eel-grass collected from the Baltic coast. This species of sea-grass is shown to contain small diameter (around 5 mu m) fibres composed of similar to 57% cellulose, similar to 38% of non-cellulosic polysaccharides (mainly xylan) and similar to 5% of residual matter so-called Klason lignin. This composition is quite different to that of commonly used terrestrial fibres. Single fibre stiffness values up to 28 GPa were measured. This stiffness combined with a low density could provide an attractive reinforcement for composite materials, and may be particularly suitable for use in bio-degradable structures.
